Media has SUCH an impact on us and sometimes we don't even realize it. I finished an unsatisfying novel that was full of amorality—not in a glorifying way, but a realistic way—and I was grumpy the rest of the day because being immersed in the characters accidentally made me project the bad qualities on my own family.

Thank you for your encouragement to turn toward Hope instead of clinging to worldly stories!

This is great Sol. I completely agree with you. Just because the vibe is a certain way doesnt mean all the faults of a show are immediately excused. And honestly, Friends is the same way. Their friendship is amazing, but so many things that are completely immoral are normalized in the show. (i still kinda love it) Thanks for putting this out there. <3

Thanks for taking the time to read!! I agree, it's odd that so many shows like to disguise questionable actions with humor and relatability. Why do we need to normalize things like infidelity and disrespect??

I always just go back to Jane Eyre. Sigh. There's a woman.

I’ve actually never read Jane Eyre!! I’ll have to do that when I finish the current series I’m in…

You’re in for a treat. I wish I could read it again for the first time. The beginning is depressing and long and very much the genre. But so worth it. I’ve returned to her again and again. Quiet little courage.

Totally feel the same way. I watched the first and second season a while back, but couldn’t go any farther because it was just too much. The drama, the constant fights between so many people, the cheating and twisted humor…I felt very convicted as a Christian that that’s what I was filling my spare time with. It’s a fun show to watch in the beginning, but it just has too much worldliness to it to watch it with a clear conscious. Thanks for sharing this! I love that you emphasized the importance of remembering there’s Hope. Happily ever afters are such a comfort to the soul☺️.

I’m glad I’m not the only one! 🙈 It’s a fun show, but I agree. The morally-questionable aspects just outweighed everything else for me. I’m so glad we have an eternal Happily Ever After to put our hope in 🫶🏼

I am proud of you for noticing how it made you feel and then change it. I sense it must have been hard to stop watching, especially as it’s such a good show. I watched it 5 years ago and love it, but I don’t know if I’d love it now the same way I did. I changed a lot and want to be more present in the moment, that’s why your thoughts made me think: maybe now I’d also not like it - not because it’s bad, but because you get too much involved with the show than with your own life. Thank you for sharing that!!

Thank you SO much for taking the time to read!! Maybe I would have enjoyed it more when I was a teenager, a little more careless and definitely more interested in the romance. But in my current season, I want to be most involved in my own life just like you said. I love your takeaway!!

While I don’t feel this way about Gilmore Girls, I have absolutely felt this with other media. Where it’s all-consuming, unhealthy, and makes me irritable- even if it’s a “wholesome” enough thing.

Thanks for sharing!!

What most important is that you can recognize it in yourself and have boundaries to protect your heart! None of us need made-up drama adding stress to our lives! Thanks for reading :)

I’m currently watching this show and still working through season 1. At first, I enjoyed the cozy atmosphere — the family dynamics, friendships, and the small-town charm. I totally agree with you that we are, in a way, shaped by what we watch, and it all depends on how we see things. Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts. I hope you find a show that feels like a soft place to land. ❤️

I never watched the show but I relate in regard to tv shows in general. They can really suck you in. Especially if you binge them. I’ve made a deal with myself that I must get something positive out of anything I watch, no matter what it is. It has been so fun to see what lessons come.

I'm so happy I'm not alone in my dislike for Gilmore Girls. I had a recent experience with a similarly dramatastic show that I just had to stop watching mid season because it wasn't making me happy and I got hooked on it. Switched to reading my indi fantasy again and I felt so much better. It's important to filter what goes into your mind.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

I watched GG in high school and was also really into it...until the last several seasons. I couldn't stand Rory in the end because of her entitlement and disrespect towards Lorelai (aka her biggest fan), as well as her poor choices with men. She was so much smarter than that—and seemingly more responsible than her own mom in the earlier seasons—yet she had basically no moral compass as she got older. And then the reboot a few years back really was the nail in the coffin for me. I had such high hopes of a decent ending, where Rory realizes and reconciles for her past mistakes and chooses to live a more honorable lifestyle, maybe even ending up with Jess...and instead she finds herself knocked up by an engaged man! (If I remember correctly, wasn't Logan the father?) Anyway, so upsetting and such wasted potential.

A lot of people are saying Rory just got worse and worse, which is sad to me. She had potential to be a successful, sweet character! I was really disappointed in the ending too. Suffice it to say I'm completely content to not watch the show anymore.

I also kind of hate Gilmore girls

I could not even finish the show because Rory was absolutely insufferable to me

One of the worst characters in TV

I will probably still watch it in the fall cus the first few seasons are nostalgic and decent

But

I agree with you it is not great

Honestly, my “maybe watch” list is like a survival game at this point — who knows what will make it through?

But agreed, it’s all about what feels right for each of us!

(Still feeling good about crossing off Gilmore Girls though 😅)
